CHNL's Projects
CHNL was involved in a demonstration project to ship iron ore from Norway to China via the NSR in September 2010. This was the outcome of a workshop in Kirkenes organized by CHNL in April that same year on the topic “opening the Northern Sea Route for bulk commodities”.
Following the workshop Tschudi Shipping Company, Sydvaranger Gruve, Atomflot and Prominvest all continued to work together and over the summer a close cooperation with the Copenhagen based operator Nordic Bulk Carriers resulted in the Danish-owned MV Nordic Barents being chartered by Tschudi Arctic Transit for the NSR voyage with a cargo of iron ore concentrate.
The vessel left Kirkenes on the 4th of September and passed the Bering Strait on September 15 on route to China where it arrived September 27. This was the first time a non-Russian bulk carrier used the NSR as a transit route departing from a non-Russian port (Kirkenes, Norway) and arriving at a non-Russian port (Lianyungang, China).
