Shipping in Arctic Waters

The purpose of the project Shipping in Arctic Waters is to present a comparative practical oriented, holistic cross disciplinary study of the different Arctic Sea Routes;
The Northeast Passage, (NEP) of which the Northern Sea Route (NSR) is the main part, The Northwest Passage (NWP) The Trans-Polar Passages (TPP) running through the Central Arctic Ocean outside of coastal state jurisdiction.

The report focus on three types of sailing routes within each passage:
  1. Intra-Arctic routes, i.e. sailing lanes between locations within the Arctic,
  2. Destination Arctic-routes, i.e. sailing lanes between harbors inside and outside of the region
  3. Transit routes, i.e. sailing lanes between harbors in the Pacific and the Atlantic via the Arctic Ocean.
The report is divided into 8 sections:
  1. Definitions of the Sea Routes in Arctic Waters and Adjacent Waters
  2. The Geopolitical and Economic potential of the various Sea Routes in the Arctic (NSR, NWP and Trans-Arctic Routes)
  3. Arctic Resources: mineral and biological
  4. Environmental challenges and other operating conditions
  5. Shipping and alternative modes of transport – a comparison
  6. Logistics, technical and competence issues
  7. Legal, jurisdictional and Human Rights issues
  8. The three alternative routes compared
